How to Swaddle a baby safely - A cozy Guide from Yellow Rabbit

Because every bunny deserves a cozy wrap.

Swaddling is a time-loved tradition of wrapping babies snuggly in a blanket to help them feel secure and settled. Think of it as a warm, gentle hug- one that mimics the cozy comfort of the womb. Not only does swaddling soothe fussy little ones, but it also helps prevent the startle reflex(you know, those sudden arm flails that can wake a sleeping baby).

But swaddling is more than just technique- it's also about safety and comfort.

Here's how to do it right.

 How to Swaddle a Baby:

  1. Lay a soft, breathable blanket/swaddle on a flat surface in a diamond shape.
  2.  Fold down the top corner to create a straight edge.
  3.  Gently lay your baby face-up, with their shoulders just below the fold.
  4. Place one arm down by their side and wrap that side of the blanket across the body. Tuck it snugly under.
  5. Repeat with the other arm- down by their side, then wrap and tuck.
  6. Fold the bottom corner up and tuck it securely (but not tightly!) under their back.

Swaddling Safety Tips:

  • Back to sleep. Always place your swaddled baby on their back to sleep.
  • Know when to stop. Once bay starts showing signs of rolling over, it's time to stop swaddling.
  • Snug, not stiff:  Keep the swaddle snug around the chest but loose enough around the hips for healthy movement.
  • Watch for overheating: Use light fabrics (like our organic cotton blankets or swaddles!) and dress baby lightly.
  • Crib safety first. Use a firm crib mattress, keep the sleep space clear- no pillow, loose blankets, or stuffed toys.
  • Let those legs wiggle. Make space for baby's legs to bend and move naturally.
  • Follow baby's cues. If your little one resists being swaddled, it's okay to skip it- every baby is unique.

When to Stop Swaddling

Once your baby starts trying to roll over (usually around 8 weeks), it's time to transition out of swaddling. Consider a sleep sack or wearable blanket to keep them cozy without a wrap.

Wrap it up: Final Thoughts from Yellow Rabbit

Swaddling can be a beautiful bonding moment, a comfort cue, and a lifesaver on sleepy nights. Just remember- every baby is different. Trust your instincts, follow safety guideline, and give yourself a big hug too.

You're doing great.
